Luxury electric vehicle maker Tesla Inc. settles with the family of a former Apple engineer who died in a crash while his Tesla was in Autopilot. Terms of the settlement are unknown. The lawsuit was filed after the engineer was killed in a crash in Silicon Valley in 2018.
Tesla’s Autopilot is an advanced driver assistance system designed to make driving safer and less stressful. The company and CEO Elon Musk believe their technology is superior to competitors.
The National Transportation Safety Board found that Autopilot was engaged for almost 19 minutes before the fatal crash in 2018. Tesla had stated that the driver had received warnings prior to the collision and the crash was severe due to a previous accident without a safety barrier replacement.
Following incidents, Tesla has faced lawsuits over crashes involving its Autopilot technology. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported potential safety issues with the Autopilot system, leading Tesla to recall around 2 million vehicles in the U.S. and over 1.6 million cars in China to fix safety concerns.
Tesla emphasizes that Autopilot features do not make its vehicles fully autonomous and are intended for use with an attentive driver. The company’s shares are currently trading at $176.01 on the Nasdaq, up 1.8%.
