China stocks rise as commodities shine; Hong Kong snaps winning streak

China stocks rose on strong performances in copper and gold miners, despite weak consumer data. The Shanghai Composite index was up 0.4% at midday. China’s blue-chip CSI300 index was flat, with financial and consumer sectors down. Hong Kong stocks broke a three-day winning streak, tracking Wall Street losses. Chinese H-shares in Hong Kong fell 0.7%. In other regions, MSCI’s Asia ex-Japan index was weaker by 0.53%, and Japan’s Nikkei index was down 0.54%. The yuan was slightly weaker at 7.2361 per U.S. dollar. In Shanghai, Xiamen XGMA Machinery Co Ltd was the top gainer, up by 10.12%. Sanxiang Advanced Materials Co Ltd was the biggest loser, down 10.018%. In Hong Kong, the energy shares sub-index rose 1.3%, while the IT sector fell 0.6%.
