Eight popular newspapers owned by Alden Global Capital have sued OpenAI and Microsoft for unauthorized use of their articles to train AI models. OpenAI has promised to negotiate with the news publications, while Microsoft has not commented. This is not the first time OpenAI has faced copyright infringement allegations, as the New York Times also sued them in December 2023.
The lawsuit was filed in a New York federal court on April 30 by newspapers such as Chicago Tribune and Denver Post. These newspapers have spent significant resources on news reporting and collection, and it is unacceptable for tech companies like OpenAI to use their work without permission or compensation. AI platforms like OpenAI not only copy news pieces but also provide inaccurate information, damaging the reputation of news sources.
OpenAI and Microsoft have faced previous lawsuits for unauthorized use of news articles, including a case with the New York Times. OpenAI has argued that their use of journalism falls under ‘Fair Use,’ while the NY Times claims it is for profit. Despite ongoing legal battles, the parties are exploring potential partnerships, indicating significant changes ahead for AI and the news industry. Other news outlets have also sued OpenAI for stolen stories, seeking damages per article.
