A group of U.S. newspaper publishers filed a lawsuit against Microsoft and OpenAI for allegedly using their online content to develop AI tools without permission or payment. The publishers claim their copyrighted articles were used to create AI platforms like Copilot and ChatGPT, resulting in billions of dollars in valuation growth for the companies.

OpenAI co-founder stated that using copyrighted material is essential for training AI systems, as modern copyright law covers various types of human expression. Tech companies argue their use of public domain content falls under fair use guidelines. However, newspapers argue that unauthorized use of their content leads to revenue loss and brand erosion.

Multiple lawsuits have been brought against Microsoft and OpenAI for copyright infringement, including by The New York Times, John Grisham, George R.R. Martin, and Jodi Picoult. Despite legal actions, OpenAI has struck deals with news organizations like The Associated Press, Axel Springer, Prisa Media, Le Monde, and the Financial Times. Microsoft has also invested $13 billion in OpenAI.
