Microsoft is banning US police departments from using its AI models for facial recognition. The Azure OpenAI system now explicitly prohibits police use for identifying suspects or verifying individuals globally. Meanwhile, OpenAI released Chat GPT-4 Turbo with Vision for text and image analysis, previously offered for federal agencies.
Microsoft’s Code of Conduct already banned using Azure OpenAI to identify individuals based on physical characteristics. The new language further restricts police agencies from using AI systems for data collection. Recent reports highlight police departments using machine learning to analyze footage, raising concerns about transparency and accountability.
Amid growing privacy concerns, Google implemented location data protections, while Axon introduced Draft One, an AI model to transcribe police body camera audio. These developments contrast with Microsoft’s stricter stance on police use of AI systems for surveillance and identification.
