Movie slate lacks franchise hits

Ryan Gosling stars in Universal’s “The Fall Guy,” the first weekend without a Marvel film in over a decade. The film only scored less than $28 million in its domestic debut, as the summer box office is expected to decline by as much as $800 million compared to last year.

Upcoming summer movie releases include “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” “Furiosa: A Mad Max Story,” and “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” with Disney’s film tracking for a $55-60 million opening. These numbers are significantly lower than last year’s major releases.

The 2024 summer movie lineup has more family-friendly options, with animated features like “Kung Fu Panda 4” and “Dune: Part Two” leading the box office. Fall and winter will bring heavy-hitters like “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” “Joker: Folie a Deux,” “Gladiator II,” and “Moana 2,” aiming to boost box office numbers.
