Walgreens will offer cheaper naloxone to combat opioid epidemic

Walgreens is launching its own cheaper version of the over-the-counter opioid overdose reversal spray naloxone, available online and in stores by the end of November. The drug aims to combat the opioid epidemic in the U.S., where over 645,000 people have died from opioid overdoses since 1999. Walgreens’ version will cost $34.99 for a two-dose pack, making it more affordable than Narcan. Naloxone can reverse the effects of overdoses from opioids like heroin and fentanyl when administered in time, blocking their effects on the brain and preventing death. Walgreens hopes to increase accessibility and reduce the stigma associated with drug overdoses and naloxone use.
