Netflix ad tier has 40 million users

Netflix’s cheaper, ad-supported tier now has 40 million global monthly active users, nearly doubling the figure from January. The company plans to launch its own advertising platform, no longer partnering with Microsoft for that technology. Netflix will test the ad tech platform in Canada later this year and aims for a global launch by the end of 2025.

In a strategic move, Netflix secured a deal to stream NFL games on Christmas Day this year, with more games planned for 2025 and 2026. The streamer will pay approximately $75 million per game, marking its first major venture into live sports. Netflix’s aggressive growth in the ad-supported subscription plan has helped boost its subscriber base to 270 million.

Netflix’s rivals in the streaming space, like Disney+ and HBO Max, also announced plans to form a streaming bundle to retain subscribers and ensure profitability. As Netflix continues to dominate the streaming industry, legacy media companies struggle in the evolving landscape. Ad market trends show a shift towards digital and streaming advertising, with Netflix leading the charge.
