The European Commission has opened formal proceedings against Meta Platforms to investigate potential breaches of the Digital Services Act related to the protection of minors. Concerns include addictive online behavior and age-verification methods. Meta shares on Nasdaq fell 1.1% to $476.20. An in-depth probe will assess compliance with DSA obligations.

Facebook and Instagram, classified as Very Large Online Platforms under the EU’s Digital Services Act, face scrutiny over their online interfaces targeting minors. The Commission will evaluate Meta’s efforts to mitigate risks of addictive behavior and inappropriate content. The investigation aims to protect children’s mental and physical well-being and privacy.

The ongoing investigation will focus on Meta’s compliance with DSA regulations on preventing minors’ access to harmful content and ensuring high levels of privacy and security. The Commission plans to conduct a thorough examination and gather evidence to potentially take enforcement actions, including interim measures and non-compliance decisions.

In addition to the current proceedings, the Commission had previously initiated investigations against Meta for deceptive advertising, political content, and data access for researchers on Facebook and Instagram.
