Reddit and OpenAI have partnered to incorporate Reddit content into ChatGPT and new products. The deal gives OpenAI access to real-time Reddit posts through the Data API. The partnership, similar to Reddit’s deal with Google, allows better understanding and showcasing of Reddit content by AI tools. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The partnership also allows Reddit access to OpenAI large language models to create features for Reddit and its volunteer moderators. Reddit’s push for data licensing comes after charging for API access last year. The move aimed to prevent AI firms from using Reddit content to train models for free, sparking user protests.

Recently, Reddit published a Public Content Policy to address unauthorized use and bulk collection of public data, emphasizing user rights and privacy. The company sees deals like OpenAI’s as part of fostering human learning and building community online. Questions arise about user-generated content used by AI models and potential compensation issues.

The partnership sparks debate about using user-generated content to fuel AI models. OpenAI faces challenges working with Reddit data known for inaccuracies and inappropriate content. Volunteer mods were some of the biggest opponents of Reddit’s API changes, impacting Reddit content quality and user experience concerns moving forward.

Despite concerns, generative AI firms are eager to tap into real-time Reddit conversations covering a wide range of topics. Reddit is equally enthusiastic about licensing data from user posts. Advance Publications, the largest shareholder of Reddit, also owns Ars Technica parent Condé Nast.
