In the global auto market, a real-life Tortoise and Hare race is happening, with some automakers prioritizing battery electric vehicles (BEVs). Toyota and Honda focus on hybrids, citing lower emissions than BEVs charged by coal-fired power stations. Toyota reported an annual operating profit of $32 billion, thanks to strong hybrid vehicle sales.

Hybrids, offering double-digit returns for automakers, contribute significantly to Toyota’s success. Hybrid sales jumped 32% to 3.59 million units, with Toyota aiming for 5 million units sold next year. Similarly, Honda targets 1 million hybrid sales this year and plans to invest $65 billion in electrification through fiscal 2031.

Honda is bullish on full electrification, planning to produce over 2 million EVs by 2030 and investing $65 billion in its electrification strategy. With a focus on smaller, cheaper-to-build hybrids to fund its EV business, Honda also plans to start selling two new EV models in China this year. Toyota and Honda’s cautious approach seems to be paying off financially, with Toyota gaining record profits and Honda ramping up its electrification efforts.
