A Hong Kong protest anthem, “Glory to Hong Kong,” was removed from streaming platforms by a UK music distributor following a court injunction in the Chinese territory, sparking concerns about potential misuse by dissidents. The song, written in 2019 during pro-democracy protests, was geoblocked on YouTube for viewers in Hong Kong since mid-May. Hong Kong’s Chief Executive, John Lee, emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring compliance with the court order, while the U.S. expressed concern about the impact on Hong Kong’s international reputation as a financial hub. The injunction, which does not have extraterritorial effect, allows exemptions for journalistic and academic activities, according to experts such as Eric Lai from Georgetown University and Lokman Tsui from the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab.
