The U.S. TSA screened 2.95 million airline passengers on Friday, a new record high. The Memorial Day weekend marks the start of the summer travel season, with airlines expected to transport 271 million passengers this year, a 6.3% increase from last year.

Airlines in the U.S. plan to operate more than 26,000 daily flights this summer, a 5.6% increase over 2023. American Airlines will boost flights by 10%, United Airlines expects to handle 3 million travelers during the Memorial Day period, and Delta Air Lines predicts a 5% increase in customers.

The Federal Aviation Administration is addressing an air traffic controller shortage. Airlines may lose their slots at congested airports if not used enough. The FAA extended cuts to flight requirements at New York airports due to staffing issues, with major airlines requesting the extension through 2025.
