Nokia set to supply 5G equipment to MEO in Portugal, replacing Huawei

Nokia is set to secure a contract to supply 5G radio equipment to Portuguese operator MEO, replacing Huawei’s 100% market share in 2G/3G/4G. The deal, not yet signed, would mark Nokia’s return to Portugal’s RAN market. The global RAN market is projected to decline 5-8% in 2024, impacting sales for Nokia and Ericsson.

Huawei, banned in the U.S. and some European countries over security concerns, maintains a presence in Europe and China’s telecom market. Despite past market share losses to Huawei in Portugal, Nokia is set to replace them in key markets soon. The contract with MEO would give Nokia a foothold in a market it had not supplied in for years.
