OpenAI partners with News Corp to use content for AI, aiming to improve journalism

From The Register: 2024-05-23 01:20:00

OpenAI and News Corp have formed a partnership, allowing OpenAI to use News Corp’s content to enhance its AI models, following recent allegations of using copyrighted content without permission. This deal could bring News Corp $250 million over five years and access to various existing publications. The ultimate goal is to help people make informed choices based on reliable news sources, although the impact of AI on journalism remains a complex issue. Fair compensation for content creators is crucial, especially as AI is increasingly used to consume and summarize content. Decentralized models for AI access to data, such as micropayments on a blockchain, could ensure fair compensation for journalists while promoting competition and inclusivity in AI development. OpenAI and News Corp have not confirmed whether News Corp journalists will be compensated for the use of their work in training AI models.
