OpenAI’s board discovered ChatGPT on Twitter, leading to CEO Sam Altman’s ousting due to reports of “psychological abuse.” A former board member, Helen Toner, provided details of the toxic atmosphere Altman created. Despite his firing, Altman was rehired four days later after staff threatened to leave.

Toner’s claims were responded to by OpenAI, stating a review of the past events was conducted. The review concluded that the decision to fire Altman was not based on safety concerns, development pace, finances, or communication with stakeholders. Altman’s return was prompted by fears of company collapse without him.
