Foreigners pull money out of EM portfolios after five months of inflows

Foreign investors withdrew money from emerging market portfolios in April due to concerns about tighter U.S. monetary policy. Outflows from Indian and Indonesian stocks led to a net non-resident portfolio outflow of $0.7 billion, the first since October. Ex-China stock portfolios saw $3.8 billion leave, while ex-China debt saw a $2.7 billion inflow.

Chinese stocks had a $0.6 billion outflow, but China debt had inflows of $0.9 billion in April. Economist Jonathan Fortun attributed emerging market equity outflows to the Federal Reserve’s hawkish stance. Markets now only price in a Fed rate cut for September, compared to earlier expectations of a cut in the first half of 2022.
