OpenAI took action to disrupt deceptive uses of AI in covert operations targeting the Lok Sabha elections 2024 within 24 hours, with no significant audience increase. The company banned accounts from Israel engaged in influence campaigns across platforms like Facebook, targeting India, Canada, the US, and Israel with English and Hebrew content.
Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar called the influence operations a “dangerous threat to democracy” specifically targeting the BJP party with misinformation and foreign interference. OpenAI emphasized its commitment to developing safe AI and preventing abuse, disrupting five covert influence operations in the last three months, including one named Zero Zeno using their models to generate content across online platforms.
