OpenAI disrupted influence operations from Russia, China, Israel and Iran, utilizing ChatGPT models to create deceptive content across social media platforms. The company terminated accounts associated with campaigns such as Bad Grammar, Doppelganger, Spamouflage, International Union of Virtual Media, and Zero Zeno. Despite efforts, these operations did not gain significant audience engagement.

The campaigns generated content critical of various entities, like the war in Ukraine, prominent critics of China, the US and Israel, and the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees. Despite the content generated, the operations did not see a meaningful increase in audience engagement or reach through OpenAI’s services.

Amidst a global increase in elections, concerns about AI spreading disinformation have risen. Last week, a Democratic Party political consultant in New Hampshire was indicted for using AI to impersonate US President Joe Biden in robocalls. In Pakistan’s parliamentary elections, former Prime Minister Imran Khan utilized AI-generated speeches despite a ban on public rallies.
