Boeing CEO to testify before Senate panel on safety concerns, facing criminal probe

Boeing’s outgoing CEO, Dave Calhoun, will testify before a U.S. Senate panel on June 18 following safety and quality concerns. The FAA capped 737 MAX production after a malfunction in January. Calhoun’s testimony is in response to past fatal crashes and promises made by Boeing in 2018. Future leadership options include Spirit AeroSystems CEO Pat Shanahan and Boeing Commercial Airplanes president Stephanie Pope.

Calhoun’s testimony aims to address Boeing’s safety failures and restore public trust. Howard McKenzie, Boeing’s chief engineer, will accompany Calhoun during the Senate hearing. FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker will testify on June 13 regarding the agency’s oversight of Boeing and other manufacturers. Boeing faces a criminal probe related to the Alaska Airlines incident.

The U.S. Justice Department stated that Boeing breached its obligations, per a 2021 agreement, regarding the 737 MAX crashes. Boeing refutes these claims, believing it has adhered to the deferred prosecution agreement. Boeing faces scrutiny as it transitions leadership and navigates ongoing investigations into safety and quality practices.
