Taiwan’s MediaTek is developing an Arm-based PC chip for Windows, challenging Apple’s Arm-based Mac chips. Microsoft’s move to optimize Windows for Arm may threaten Intel’s PC market dominance. Shares of MediaTek closed 2.4% higher. The chip is set to launch next year after Qualcomm’s exclusive chip supply deal ends.

Microsoft’s cooperation with Qualcomm to move Windows to Arm is set to expire, leading to new chips from other designers to support the move. Nvidia and AMD are also working on Arm designs for Windows machines. Nvidia is collaborating with MediaTek for its PC chip while MediaTek is also separately developing its PC chip.

Microsoft has yet to approve MediaTek’s PC chip for its Windows program, which uses ready-made Arm designs to speed up development. Arm’s customer was able to build a chip in nine months using ready-made components, unlike MediaTek, which is still designing its chip. Advanced chip designs can take over a year depending on complexity.
