Elon Musk Isn’t Done With Sam Altman and the AI Race Just yet

Elon Musk dropped his lawsuit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman, despite his ongoing interest in the AI race. Musk accused OpenAI of betraying its nonprofit mission when he filed the lawsuit in February. His withdrawal came right before a judge was set to consider OpenAI’s request to dismiss the case.

Musk’s decision to withdraw the lawsuit does not indicate reconciliation with Altman, especially after Apple’s partnership with OpenAI was announced. Musk threatened to ban Apple devices at his companies over alleged security concerns, despite Apple’s assurances of privacy protections for users accessing ChatGPT.

Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI may have been more about publicly challenging Altman than winning the case. He has been busy positioning his companies for the AI era, referring to Tesla as an “AI or robotics company” and teasing a new robotaxi concept. His AI startup xAI recently raised $6 billion in funding, making it the second-most valuable AI company after OpenAI.

With Musk gearing up to compete with OpenAI, the spotlight is on Altman. The battle in the AI race is far from over.
