Alphabet’s Waymo is recalling 672 self-driving vehicles after one crashed into a wooden utility pole in Phoenix, Arizona in May. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating reports of robotaxis violating traffic laws and 17 collisions. Waymo plans to update software and mapping to improve vehicle detection response.
The collision in Arizona occurred while the Waymo vehicle was executing a low-speed pullover maneuver in an alleyway. The recall remedy includes a software update to enhance detection response to poles or similar objects, as well as robust mapping updates and improvements that have been implemented in all vehicles.
