OpenAI appoints retired US Army General Paul M. Nakasone, former NSA head, to its board of directors. Nakasone led the NSA from 2018 to February 2024 and supported the renewal of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, reauthorized by Congress in April.
Nakasone will join OpenAI’s Safety and Security Committee, focusing on cybersecurity efforts. Recent departures include co-founder Ilya Sutskever and Jan Leike, citing concerns over safety culture. Board chair Bret Taylor emphasizes the importance of securely building and deploying AI for positive impacts on society.
