Apple will integrate OpenAI’s ChatGPT AI assistant into upcoming versions of iPhone, iPad, and Mac operating systems. Speculation arises about financial implications, but Apple considers the placement on its devices as compensation. The partnership may not generate revenue in the short term but could lead to paid subscriptions for OpenAI and easy access to ChatGPT for Apple users.
OpenAI’s rise to prominence in the tech industry through ChatGPT has allowed it to secure deals with publishers and continued support from Microsoft for access to its large language model technology. Apple’s integration of ChatGPT as its first external AI partner has led to misunderstandings, as Apple also promotes its own in-house LLM technology.
Apple chose OpenAI as its first third-party AI partner due to its leading LLM technology. However, OpenAI faces public controversies, including accusations of imitating voices, resignations, restrictive NDAs, and accusations of abuse. Critics worry about privacy issues related to gathering data for training AI models and misconceptions about the Apple-OpenAI deal.
Apple’s partnership with OpenAI is not exclusive, and talks are underway to offer Google’s Gemini chatbot and potentially partner with Anthropic for AI services. Apple aims to provide users with a range of AI options, similar to its approach with search engines in Safari.
