The first U.S. presidential debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump will have two commercial breaks, no props, and muted microphones except when recognized to speak, CNN announced. The event will take place on June 27 and will be moderated by CNN anchors in Atlanta, with a second debate set for September 10 on ABC.
Both candidates will stand at uniform podiums, podium positions determined by a coin flip. Microphones will be muted throughout the 90-minute debate, except when it is the candidate’s turn to speak, said CNN. Moderators will enforce timing and ensure a civilized discussion using all tools at their disposal.
Campaign staff may not interact with their candidate during two commercial breaks, and there will be no studio audience, as announced by CNN. Candidates must meet specific criteria to participate, including being on enough state ballots to reach 270 electoral votes needed to win and receiving at least 15% in four national polls.
Debates, which attract a large U.S. live television audience, hold risks for both candidates in a close race. Biden’s preferred debate topics include abortion rights, democracy, and the economy, according to a campaign memo. Trump’s team highlights immigration, public safety, and inflation as key issues leading up to the debate.
