Amazon.com, Inc. has replaced 95% of plastic air pillows with paper filler in North America shipments, aiming for full removal by 2024. This effort will eliminate 15 billion plastic air pillows annually and prioritize recyclable materials.
The company’s transition to paper filler started in 2023 at a Ohio fulfillment center, offering similar product protection. Paper filler is curbside recyclable and made of 100% recycled content.
To achieve this change in less than a year, Amazon coordinated with fulfillment centers and suppliers for 100% recycled content. The company also trained employees on new machinery and systems to support the shift towards sustainable packaging.
Amazon’s commitment to reducing packaging waste includes the “Ships in Product Packaging” program, where 11% of packages globally were shipped without additional packaging in 2022. The company also collaborates with the U.S. Department of Energy and Glacier AI for innovative recycling solutions.
