OpenAI has acquired Rockset, a relational database developer, to advance real-time analytics and AI capabilities. Rockset, founded in 2016 by former Facebook engineers, provides a database allowing SQL queries on data milliseconds after ingestion, serving customers like JetBlue and Meta. The acquisition aims to enhance OpenAI’s data access for AI applications.

Rockset’s cloud-native database utilizes RocksDB and fast key-value storage to enable real-time analytics with SQL queries. Over the years, the company added vector data types and search capabilities to serve large language models like ChatGPT. Rockset’s goal is to simplify data infrastructure for data-driven applications and AI advancements in various industries.

CEO Venkat Venkataramani expressed excitement over the acquisition, emphasizing Rockset’s contribution to making AI applications more robust and beneficial. OpenAI plans to integrate Rockset’s technology into its retrieval infrastructure across products, ensuring faster customer access to data and real-time information. Rockset customers are advised to look for new platforms as the company will cease operations.
