Ilya Sutskever, a co-founder of OpenAI involved in a failed attempt to oust CEO Sam Altman, has announced the creation of a safety-focused artificial intelligence company called Safe Superintelligence Inc. The company aims to develop “superintelligence” AI systems that surpass human intelligence, prioritizing safety over commercial pressures.

Safe Superintelligence Inc, based in Palo Alto, California, and Tel Aviv, was founded by Sutskever along with co-founders Daniel Gross and Daniel Levy. Sutskever, who left OpenAI last month, emphasized the importance of developing safe superintelligence as a critical technical problem, with a focus on advancing capabilities while ensuring safety remains ahead.

Following his departure from OpenAI and a failed bid to remove Altman, Sutskever revealed that his departure was his decision. The new company’s approach revolves around solving technical issues related to safety and capabilities in tandem while advancing technologies responsibly.

Former OpenAI staffers have criticized major AI firms for prioritizing commercial gains over safety concerns, a sentiment echoed by Elon Musk, another co-founder of OpenAI. Sutskever’s new company, alongside co-founders Levy and Gross, views safe superintelligence as the most crucial technical problem of our time, seeking to advance AI capabilities while upholding safety standards.
