OpenAI acquires real-time search and analytics startup Rockset, founded by Indian techies Venkat Venkataramani and Dhruba Borthakur, for an undisclosed amount in a stock deal valued at several hundred million dollars. The acquisition is crucial for OpenAI’s enterprise products, enhancing the retrieval infrastructure for ChatGPT and providing faster, more accurate responses. Rockset’s expertise will be integrated into OpenAI’s framework to bolster technological capabilities.

Rockset, specializing in real-time search and analytics databases, has raised $105 million in funding from investors like Greylock and Sequoia. The startup was last valued at $86 billion earlier this year, making it one of OpenAI’s largest acquisitions. The Rockset team, including Venkataramani and Borthakur, will join OpenAI to contribute their expertise and technology to enhance AI models’ capabilities.

OpenAI’s CTO Mira Murati discusses the future of AI at Dartmouth Engineering, predicting the launch of the next generation of ChatGPT in late 2025 or early 2026, with “PhD-level intelligence” for specific tasks. This advancement highlights AI’s potential to revolutionize industries, emphasizing OpenAI’s strategic acquisition of Rockset to strengthen their market position and technological capabilities for future innovations.
