CIR is suing Microsoft and OpenAI for copyright violations, joined by other media outlets

The Center for Investigative Reporting is suing Microsoft and OpenAI for alleged copyright infringement, accusing them of using their stories without permission or compensation. CIR argues that this behavior not only damages their relationships with readers and partners but also strips them of income. Many other media outlets, including The New York Times, have also taken legal action against OpenAI and Microsoft.

CIR’s lawsuit is part of a larger group of eight publications owned by Hedge fund Alden Global Capital, which includes the New York Daily News and the Chicago Tribune, suing the tech companies. Despite some lawsuits being partially rejected, groups of writers and even comedian Sarah Silverman have filed complaints. OpenAI has licensing deals with several media organizations, such as The Associated Press, Financial Times, and Vox Media, to showcase their content in their products. OpenAI states they work with the news industry and partners to promote original articles through features like summaries and citations in products like ChatGPT.
