The FDA approved Eli Lilly’s Alzheimer’s drug donanemab, now named Kisunla, for early symptomatic Alzheimer’s disease. Nearly 7 million Americans have Alzheimer’s, a number expected to rise to almost 13 million by 2050. Donanemab will compete with Biogen’s Leqembi as both drugs target amyloid plaques to slow disease progression.

Eli Lilly’s drug slowed Alzheimer’s progression by 35% over 18 months compared to a placebo. It will cost $12,522 – $48,696 for a 6 to 18-month course and is covered by Medicare for eligible patients. Safety risks include severe brain swelling and bleeding, with three patients dying from side effects during a late-stage trial.
