Apple will have an observer role on OpenAI’s board per an agreement, Bloomberg reported. Apple Fellow Phil Schiller will take the board position but cannot vote. The role puts Apple on par with Microsoft in OpenAI, but Apple could be excluded from discussions on private AI plans. Apple and OpenAI have an earlier partnership for ChatGPT integration.

Apple’s partnership with OpenAI allows Siri to access ChatGPT with user permission. The arrangement is non-financial, and Apple may expand AI partnerships to Google, Anthropic, Baidu, and Alibaba Group for products in China. Apple may announce the Google partnership in the fall when launching OpenAI-partnered features, as per Bloomberg.
