Talen Energy is defending its Amazon data center deal against a challenge from electric utilities who claim it could increase power bills. The agreement, providing up to 960 megawatts for Amazon, is seen as crucial for tech companies racing to power data centers. A decision by FERC could set a precedent for similar deals.

The utilities, including AEP and Exelon, claim the deal could shift $140 million in costs to ratepayers. Talen argues that rejecting the deal or holding a hearing could stifle data center growth and deter new power plant construction. FERC has not indicated when a decision will be made on the issue.
