OpenAI experienced a security breach in 2023, but did not disclose it publicly. The attacker accessed internal messaging systems and stole AI technology designs. Executives did not report it as a national security threat or to law enforcement.
Former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner expressed concern about foreign countries stealing company secrets. OpenAI disputed his claims and said his concerns did not lead to his firing.

The New York Times reported a conflict of interest, as they sued OpenAI and Microsoft for alleged copyright infringement. OpenAI believes the case is without merit.
