Google and Microsoft see increases in carbon emissions due to data centers and AI training

Google’s latest environmental report reveals a 13% increase in greenhouse gas emissions in 2023, resulting in a 48% jump since 2019. The company attributes this to data center energy consumption and AI training, making emission reduction a challenge. Google is implementing strategies to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030, like optimizing data centers and utilizing carbon-free energy sources.

Microsoft is also struggling to meet climate goals, with a 29.1% increase in emissions since 2020. Bill Gates’ company aims to address this in their annual sustainability report. Both tech giants face challenges in balancing AI innovation with environmental sustainability as they work towards carbon neutrality.
