OpenAI, led by Sam Altman, is seeking to develop its own AI chips to reduce reliance on Nvidia’s GPUs. Altman is in talks with Broadcom and other chip designers to manufacture a proprietary AI chip, aiming to bolster supply of components and infrastructure for running powerful AI models.
In efforts to achieve its goal of creating AI chips, OpenAI is hiring ex-Google employees with experience in developing Google’s tensor processing unit. Earlier reports had mentioned Altman’s plan to raise billions of dollars to establish semiconductor factories.
Partnering with Broadcom, known for designing custom AI accelerators like Google’s TPUs, aligns with OpenAI’s goals. Broadcom’s expertise in creating custom ASIC solutions and providing a wide array of silicon products crucial for data center operations makes it a strong fit for OpenAI’s needs.
While OpenAI may not immediately match Nvidia’s technological prowess, it aims to become more self-reliant by potentially introducing a new chip by 2026. Establishing a presence in Tokyo earlier this year and collaborating with various organizations, OpenAI is expanding its reach and exploring new revenue streams to advance AI technology.
