Water conservation efforts by California Water Service (Cal Water) customers have led to bill reductions of up to 20.5% over the last 15 years. The Alliance for Water Efficiency study highlights that conservation measures decreased operating costs and saved customers money.

Cal Water’s water conservation initiatives since 2009, including tiered rate structures, have contributed to cost reductions and environmental benefits like lower energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The utility’s efforts have enabled smaller rate adjustments despite infrastructure investments.

Without the decrease in water demand since 2008-2009, Cal Water service areas would have seen bill increases of at least 1.2 to 20.5%. Investments in water conservation have been more than offset by reduced water production costs and deferred capital spending.

Investing in water conservation benefits customers by mitigating the increase in water service costs over time. California Water Service is committed to enhancing the quality of life for customers and communities through responsible investment in water and wastewater infrastructure.
