Green Bay Packers stock ownership team valuation

From CNBC: 2024-09-06 08:00:01

The Green Bay Packers are the only NFL team with a unique ownership structure where they are publicly traded. The franchise is valued at $6.3 billion and is completely owned by stockholders, with over 5.2 million outstanding shares held by more than 538,000 people.

Stockholders have no financial gains from ownership, shares do not pay dividends, and are nontransferable except to relatives. The Packers generated $638 million in revenue in 2023, with earnings of $128 million. The revenue goes towards player salaries, stadium maintenance, and other expenses.

The unique ownership structure of the Packers makes them an unattractive investment for private equity firms, with a 200,000 share ownership cap per individual. Despite the low-cost shares, timing of stock offerings has been a challenge for fans looking to own a piece of the team.

The Packers’ ownership structure, small market size, and long-term stability at quarterback make them unique within the NFL. The team recently signed Jordan Love to a four-year, $220 million extension as they prepare to kick off their season against the Philadelphia Eagles.
