The FDA authorized the first over-the-counter hearing aid software for use with compatible AirPods Pro headphones, allowing personalized sound amplification in real time. Apple announced new hearing health features for AirPods Pro 2 users in over 100 countries. The software can serve as an OTC hearing aid for adults with mild-to-moderate hearing impairment.

Over 30 million American adults experience hearing loss, caused by aging, loud noises, medical conditions, and other factors. The FDA’s approval of an over-the-counter hearing aid software aims to improve the accessibility and acceptability of hearing support. Apple’s Hearing Aid Feature, approved in 2022, is a software-only mobile application setup using an iOS device.
