On the day of the iPhone 16 launch in Beijing, many affluent Apple users also expressed interest in Huawei’s pricier trifold phone. Huawei has sought to rebuild its smartphone business in China after U.S. sanctions, ranking fourth in market share. The iPhone 16 range starts at $799, while Huawei’s Mate XT is around $2,800.

While there were long lines outside Apple stores in Beijing, there were no lines outside Huawei stores as the Chinese company started delivering the new phones to those who had reserved them. Huawei’s website indicated a halt in sales, planning to resume and complete deliveries by Sept. 30. Some customers were interested in reselling the trifold device for a profit.

One individual at the Huawei store said he was interested in trying out the new Mate XT to see if he would keep it, give it away, or sell it for a profit. Another person in line at the Apple store mentioned wanting to get the Huawei trifold phone as well, highlighting interest in new features and technologies among consumers in China.
