The U.S. SEC approved options trading for BlackRock’s spot bitcoin ETF, ticker symbol “IBIT,” on Nasdaq. Index options on a bitcoin index offer a quick way to amplify exposure to bitcoin for institutional investors and traders. Approval of options tied to a bitcoin ETF is a positive step for cryptocurrency. Since the launch of bitcoin ETFs earlier this year, cryptocurrency has gained mainstream acceptance. Exchanges have applied for spot bitcoin ETF options after the SEC approved underlying ETFs in January. The SEC oversees technical rule changes needed for listing options and existing surveillance procedures will apply to IBIT options.
