Hitachi Rail is integrating NVIDIA AI technology to reduce maintenance costs, lower train idling time, and improve transit reliability for passengers. The new HMAX platform will process sensor and camera data in real time, enabling quicker detection of track repairs and monitoring of trains & signaling equipment. Proactive maintenance is estimated to cost 7x less than emergency repairs. NVIDIA IGX and Holoscan platforms will further increase savings by providing real-time analysis capabilities.

Hitachi Rail has developed new accelerated AI applications using NVIDIA IGX and AI Enterprise software to monitor train fleets and infrastructure. These applications will help operators process large amounts of data streaming from sensors onboard trains and can send timely alerts for maintenance issues. The AI insights can also be accessed through a chatbot interface for easy identification of trends and maintenance optimization opportunities.

By mounting cameras on trains, Hitachi Rail can monitor power lines overhead in real time to prevent failures. Traditional processing time for video data collected by the train takes up to 10 days, but with NVIDIA-accelerated sensor processing, data can be analyzed immediately at the edge. This enables relevant information to be sent back to control centers for quick analysis and action.
