During the third quarter of 2024, Ford Motor lost its top position in electric vehicle sales to General Motors as EV growth slowed. Ford reported a 0.7% increase in new vehicle sales, including a 12.2% rise in EVs. Ford’s EV sales increased 45% in 2024 through September to 67,689 units, while GM reported sales of 70,450 units. Hyundai remains a distant second to Tesla in U.S. EV sales.

General Motors has been expanding its EV lineup with eight “Ultium-based” models, while Ford focuses on expanding hybrid models. Despite de-emphasizing near-term EV plans, Ford executives like CEO Jim Farley have emphasized the brand’s position in sales. Ford ranked second behind Tesla in sales during the third quarter, and overall U.S. sales this year were up 2.7% to over 1.5 million vehicles sold.
