Taiwan’s China Airlines is not under political pressure to choose between Boeing or Airbus for long-haul fleet refreshment. They’re considering Boeing’s 777X and Airbus A350-1000 to replace their 10 Boeing 777-300ERs. The decision is internal, with no external influence. The U.S. supports Taiwan, complicating the decision given November’s election.
China Airlines, majority-owned by Taiwan’s government, deals with sensitive decisions around aircraft purchases. In 2022, they ordered $4.6 billion worth of Boeing 787s after U.S. House Speaker Pelosi’s visit to Taipei. They already operate Airbus A350-900s and the freighter version of the 777. The 787s will arrive from next year.
China Airlines is replacing Boeing 737-800s with Airbus A321s by 2026. They currently operate 15 Airbus A350-900s. The airline aims to make strategic fleet decisions independent of political pressures, as they navigate Taiwan’s unique international situation and sensitivity to China’s claims.
