Zscaler, Inc. published the 2024 Mobile, IoT, and OT Threat Report, revealing a 111% growth in spyware and 29% growth in banking malware. The United States is the top target for cybersecurity attacks. Cybercriminals are targeting legacy assets, leading to data breaches and ransomware attacks.

Financially motivated mobile attacks are on the rise, with a 29% increase in banking malware and 111% increase in spyware attacks. Anatsa, an Android banking malware, has targeted over 650 financial institutions in Germany, Spain, Finland, South Korea, and Singapore.

Technology, education, and manufacturing sectors are most targeted by mobile malware, with education seeing a 136% increase in blocked transactions. Manufacturing experiences the highest volume of IoT malware attacks, with a 36% share of all blocks observed.

The US is the primary target for IoT cyberattacks, receiving 81% of the traffic. India is now the most targeted country for mobile malware, followed by the US, Canada, South Africa, and the Netherlands.

OT systems are vulnerable due to legacy operating systems, leaving them exposed to cyber threats. Thousands of connected devices in OT deployments create a large attack surface for external threats to exploit.

To secure mobile, IoT, and OT, organizations must adopt a zero trust architecture. Zscaler for IoT and OT enables enterprises to reduce cyber risk and increase productivity while protecting IoT devices and preventing lateral movement.

The 2024 Threat Report emphasizes the need to secure mobile endpoints, IoT devices, and OT systems. Zscaler analyzed data from June 2023 to May 2024, comprising over 20 billion threat-related mobile transactions and cyberthreats.
