Tobacco product use among middle and high school students is at a 25-year low, with 2.25 million students using any tobacco product in the past month, down from 2.8 million in 2023. E-cigarette use has declined to 1.63 million in 2024 from 2.13 million in 2023. Price hikes, media campaigns, and smoke-free policies contributed to this drop.
Female and Hispanic students reported the biggest drops in tobacco product use. E-cigarettes remain the most used at 5.9%, followed by nicotine pouches at 1.8% and cigarettes at 1.4%. Nicotine pouch use increased slightly from 1.2% in 2023 to 1.8% in 2024. Public health efforts are crucial to keep youth tobacco-free.
Zyn, owned by Philip Morris International, is the most popular nicotine pouch brand at 68.7%. Early this year, Zyn experienced a social media surge, causing a nationwide shortage. Philip Morris invested $600 million in a new Zyn production facility in response. The survey was conducted on 29,861 students from 283 schools between Jan. 22 and May 22.
