The U.S. securities regulator has granted “accelerated approval” to 11 exchange-traded funds to list and trade options tied to spot bitcoin prices on the New York Stock Exchange. The Securities and Exchange Commission’s approval of the bitcoin ETFs in January marked a significant milestone for the cryptocurrency industry.
Funds like Fidelity Wise Origin Fund, ARK21Shares Bitcoin ETF, and Grayscale Bitcoin Trust BTC have received approval to trade options on a bitcoin index. These index options provide institutional investors and traders with a new way to hedge their exposure to the world’s largest cryptocurrency.
Options are listed derivatives that offer the holder the right to buy or sell an asset at a predetermined price by a set date. The regulator’s recent approval of options for BlackRock’s exchange-traded fund on the Nasdaq reflects the growing acceptance and integration of cryptocurrency products in traditional financial markets.
