Spirit AeroSystems weighs more furloughs, layoffs if Boeing strike lasts
From CNBC: 2024-10-24 15:49:19
Spirit AeroSystems is considering furloughs or layoffs for hundreds more employees if the Boeing machinists’ strike continues past Nov. 25, following a 64% vote against a new labor contract. The strike has halted Boeing’s aircraft production, leading Spirit to prepare to furlough 700 workers in Wichita, Kansas.
The potential further reductions in staff would add to the already planned 21-day furloughs, as suppliers like Spirit face the strain of the strike on the aerospace supply chain. Boeing employs over 32,000 machinists who walked off the job in September, impacting the production of their best-selling 737 Max aircraft.
Boeing, in the process of acquiring Spirit, reported a third-quarter net loss of $477 million. The company’s new CEO, Kelly Ortberg, is prioritizing a deal with the striking machinists to resolve the work stoppage while the workers’ union is keen to resume negotiations. Supply chain pressure is also affecting Airbus.
