The U.S. has ordered Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co to stop shipping advanced chips used in AI applications to Chinese customers starting Monday. This move comes after it was discovered that TSMC chips were found in a Huawei AI processor, violating export controls. TSMC has suspended shipments to certain Chinese chip designers as a result.
The U.S. order targets sophisticated chips of 7 nanometers or more, used in AI accelerators and GPUs destined for China. This action is part of a broader effort to prevent companies from diverting chips to Huawei for its AI processor. TSMC notified affected clients that it was suspending chip shipments starting Monday. The Commerce Department declined to comment on the matter.
The Biden administration has been delayed in updating rules on tech exports to China, despite drafting new rules in July. The U.S. has previously sent letters to companies like Nvidia and AMD restricting their ability to export AI-related chips to China. There are concerns about the adequacy of export controls on China, with bipartisan lawmakers expressing worries about enforcement.
